Performance Benefits:
Curran® is used in the paper making process to enhance core physical properties such as strength, smoothness, and reduced porosity. Curran® is typically loaded into the paper furnish at 2% to 5% of the dry fibre weight to achieve optimal benefits. Customer studies commonly show double digit percentage increase in dry and wet tensile strength, ring crush and burst strength, Sheffield smoothness, and Gurley porosity with the addition of Curran®.

In a world where mechanized automation is all around us, porosity becomes a critical quality attribute. Many mechanized automations for fast-moving consumer goods are controlled through vacuum heads. Curran® closes-up the porosity of the fibers making them perform better, and with higher consistency. Customers appreciate this value when they see a decrease in their operating expenses to clear jams from high-speed production. Reduced porosity also means reduced absorption of coatings into the fibre when applied. This, in turn, improves the economics and recyclability of the end-product.


Smoothness Improves Print Quality.
While Curran® is not a water barrier per se, it does significantly slow the absorption of water. This characteristic enables aqueous inks and coatings to sit on the surface of the paper with less “dive-in”. The slowing of absorption is sufficient for the coatings and inks to get through the curing process with higher efficiency and quality.

Processing and Integration
Integration of Curran into Paper.
The pulper has sufficient shear to break up and disperse Curran® evenly with the fibres. For highly automated paper operations, Curran® can be pre-diluted and then pumped into the paper furnish in a manner to ensure even distribution and deliver the target % solids of Curran compared to paper fibres.
Once integrated with the fibres, Curran®’s highly fibrillated edges of the platelets will form very strong -OH bonds with the adjacent fibres enhancing strength. The platelet structure also provides benefits for smoothing, and reduced porosity. The unique geometry of Curran® improves drainage compared to tree-fiber MFC.
