Curran® is inherently sustainable throughout its life cycle.
Because Curran® utilises existing waste streams, it does not compete with food production for land use. Manufacturing is designed to minimise energy consumption, water usage, and chemical inputs.
Circularity

Circularity is embedded within the Curran® production process.
A. Raw Material Sourcing
Sugar beet pulp, a by-product of the sugar extraction process, is transported next door to the Curran® manufacturing plant.
B. Manufacturing Process
Sugar beet pulp is refined into Curran® Microfibrillated Cellulose, which is used to produce fibre-based packaging and an array of other sustainable materials.
During manufacturing of Curran®, soluble sugars are released while cleaning the cell wall structure and create a waste stream of sugary water.
C. Waste Utilization
Production Wastewater can be converted to additional sustainable production value streams including:
- Biogas production – Capable of generating up to five times the energy required for Curran® manufacturing, with surplus energy returned to the grid;
- Animal feed – Suitable for applications such as poultry nutrition;
- Fertiliser – Returning nutrients to agricultural soils to support future sugar beet crops;
- Recirculated wastewater can also be used for new production.
* With Sugar packaged in Curran®-enabled bags, a highly sustainable, circular production cycle uses both product and by-product of the Sugar Beet.
