Beginnings
CelluComp’s story starts along the coastal shores of Edinburgh, where innovation met purpose.
CelluComp was founded by Dr. David Hepworth and Dr. Eric Whale, both material scientists with backgrounds in chemistry, engineering and biology. Together they found miraculous properties from opening up plant cell walls of carrots, which led to the discovery of a unique material called Curran® (Gaelic word for carrot).
The team’s first commercial breakthrough was an award-winning bio-composite fishing rod, a product that showcased the performance potential of Curran®.
Leadership and Vision
CelluComp entered a new growth phase when Christian Kemp-Griffin, a business executive with experience in sustainable agriculture and textiles, joined as investor and CEO.
CelluComp successfully raised capital and built its first demonstration facility in Scotland, building on its mission to create Material Change for Good: a commitment to significant change using materials, from now on, and for the good of people, planet and industry.
Establishing U.S. Production
In 2025, CelluComp secured strategic investment and opened its first commercial production facility of Curran® in Renville, Minnesota, a small town reflecting the agricultural heritage and resilience that align with CelluComp’s values.
The Curran® facility is strategically located next to the most productive sugar beet factory in the world, enabling efficient integration with CelluComp’s business and providing the local community with high-valued career opportunities.
Scaling Through Strategic Supply
Demand for Curran® went beyond the availability of global carrot supply.
Sugar beet pulp, another similar root vegetable, produces 294 million tons globally. It is abundant, reliably available and consistent and geographically diverse.
A Global Organisation
While manufacturing has expanded internationally, CelluComp’s research and development operations remain anchored in Fife, Scotland—where the company’s journey began.
As a world capital of science and industry, with a tradition of innovation, environmentalism, and social progress, it’s not surprising that one of the most important advances in material science – Curran®, was invented here in Scotland. Moving into brand new premises in Dalgety Bay, Fife, our company Headquarters, R&D, and pilot production plant is home to an innovation engine that continues to expand the application of Microfibrillated Cellulose to a broad range of product categories with development partners across the globe.
Today, CelluComp is an international organization with team members across Scotland, France, and the United States. Our collaborative structure reflects our belief that innovation thrives when expertise, culture, and perspective intersect.

Building on that success, CelluComp expanded into additional bio-composite applications, including skateboards and architectural wall coatings—each reinforcing the versatility and durability of Curran® to enhance performance properties.
