Reef®

The Curran®-enabled Recyclable & Repulpable* Aqueous Coating for grease, moisture and WVTR Barrier.

Reef® is an aqueous barrier coating from CelluComp that is designed to deliver grease, water, and water- vapour barrier. It is heat sealable and can be used as a tie-layer adhesive for paper-to-paper bonding. 


Reef® is appropriate for recyclable and repulpable when applied to paper.

How REEF® Works in Combination with Curran®—enabled substrates

Curran® is part of the Reef® formulation. It is designed for optimal performance as a team when applied to papers that have Curran® IN, or Curran® ON. With Curran® the fibres are prepared first to have optimal surface smoothness, reduced pinholes, and slower absorption. Reef® on the surface delivers barrier, and heat seal capability. Since Curran® is included in the Reef® formulation, the unique Curran® platelet further helps to create a tortuous path to deliver barrier objectives.


Reef® is designed to displace non-recyclable plastic films with aqueous barrier coated papers and moulded fibre. Reef®, when applied to paper or moulded fibre, is certified as both recyclable and re-pulpable.

Application Techniques 

Reef® is suitable for use in existing coating technologies such as rod, flexo, gravure, reverse gravure, air knife, blade, flexo spray, and curtain coating. The Curran® in the Reef® coating has shear thinning properties enabling CelluComp to custom tune rheologies for discrete applications. Maximum barrier performance is achieved by applying two lower coat-weight layers of Reef® to reduce pin holes.
